Best and worst sketch comedy parodies...
« on: March 01, 2005, 09:01:13 PM »
What do you think were the best and worst sketch comedy satires of a game show that you remember?

My opinion:
BEST: (Besides the Celeb Jeopardies, which are givens...) Perhaps MadTV's take on Millionaire. The actor playing Regis didn't really have the right voice, but he had the body gestures down cold.

WORST: MadTV's take on Ken Jennings. The actors playing KenJen and Alex were so off, it wasn't even funny.

Discuss and cuss.

I'm not sure what the worst would be, but my favorite goes way back.

It was when Steve Martin played "Art F-114", host of Jeopardy! 1999 on a 1976 episode of Saturday Night Live.  Back then, no one thought Jeopardy! would be back, much less be on in 1999, nor would Don Pardo still be working on SNL.

That actor was an actress--Alex Borstein, the same Alex Borstein who co-hosted the first season of Celebrity Blackjack.

And I agree with a previous poster--Jeopardy! 1999 was the best ever.

Quick question about Celeb Jeopardy: Was the first sketch the "Swords" one?

Best: Celebrity Jeopardy, Vague, Trick Questions (not sure of the title, but it was first season Mad TV)

Worst: Old French Whore, Grand Theft Auto (Mad TV)
"They're both Norman Jewison movies, Troy, but we did think of one Jew more famous than Tevye."

Now celebrating his 22nd season on GSF!

My All-Time Favorite:  Jackie Rogers Jr. $100,000 Jackpot Wad!

"Now, you all know the rules. They're very much like "Pyramid", but different."

Transcript of the sketch.  I've only seen it once, but it has permanently etched itself into my brain.

Jacky Rogers Jr's $100,000 Jackpot Wad comes immediately to mind, as does Community College Bowl.

I can't think of one for "worst" right now; it's been several years since I've watched SNL or Mad TV.

WHAAAAAAA?  "Old French Whore" is definitely one of my all-time favorites...if for nothing else, seeing Garth Brooks as an aging French prostitute is a scream! :)  Hell, I love this one so much, I even managed to find the theme music from it!

One of my favorite "SNL" bits of all time isn't a game show parody per se, but I think it should count in this thread:  Tom Hanks as "Mr. Short-Term Memory" appearing on a game show with celebrity partner Tony Randall.

And for no good reason, I really enjoyed "Wedgie Fever!"  I can still make myself laugh by imitating Jon-Lovitz-with-a-wedgie saying "O-klahoma City!"

I can't remember the name of the GS, I think it was on the Jamie Kennedy show (midnight EST on ABC Family, maybe a couple months ago). It had 3 contestants, one was not informed of the rules until the game started, and they were REALLY complicated. Maybe someone remembers what I'm talking about.

Celebrity Jeopardy on SNL....... ah, the classics. Here at college some of the outtakes are quoted even amongst those that hate game shows. It was absolutely hilarious, and is still traded around.

I haven't seen enough to make a clear judgement, but one of the ones I hated was the Bensonhurst Dating Game (with Joe Pesci playing the host).

No mention of the Coneheads on Family Feud?  No, Bill Murray didn't make the best Richard Dawson, but I ROFL the last time I saw it on Nick at Nite.

I believe that one's on SNL's best game show parodies tape. They pop up from time to time on ebay.

I still have never seen the MADtv Family Feud sketch. From the clip they showed on the E! THS it looked hilarious. Is it online anywhere?

What about East Hollywood Squares on MADtv with Peter Marshall? I thought that was pretty good.
